Piers Anthony

Who Is Piers Anthony?

Born August 6th, 1934, Piers Anthony is the pseudonym of author Piers Anthony Dillingham Jacob. Piers is a very prolific writer, whose first novel "Chthon" was published in 1967. Most of his early work is in the field of science fiction, and later he has done more fantasy. He has diversified into historical fiction, horror, martial arts, and erotic fiction as well.

While he has written numerous novels and short stories, Piers is famous for his series of books, such as the Incarnations of Immortality, the Apprentice Adept, the Mode series, and his best known work, the Xanth series.

He lives with his wife Cam in Inverness, Citrus County, Florida and makes very few public appearances.

See Bio and Pictures for more information. Piers' autobiography (to age 50) is "Bio of an Ogre." His next biography (from age 50 on) is "How Precious Was That While" and is not yet published.

Why the spelling "Compleat" instead of "Complete?"

I decided to use "Compleat" as originally I thought it an English term or spelling. There have been a few books out using it, The Compleat Enchanter for one. I just thought it was unique and a little different.

Then I received a letter from Piers Anthony, dated DisMember 14, 1999. He was checking out The Compleat Piers Anthony site and had this to say:

"I just checked out the Compleat site, typing it from the listing on the card; it's on our [HiPiers] links list, but I don't think I have actually visited it before, at least not with its present offerings. It does look good, and I'll be happy to recommend it to others who want more information on me. I gather you are not aware of the origin of the "Compleat" spelling; it dates from some time back in England, when Isaac Walton published The Compleat Angler in 1653, supposedly containing everything anyone needed to know about fishing. Ever since, the spelling has been a tip-off for somewhat grandiose and/or humorous claims. The book was neither complete—I understand it was somewhat rambling, with much folklore and false information—nor was it necessarily spelled that way, but it has become a useful linguistic icon. So your use is correct." ... Piers Anthony, 12/14/1999

So "The Compleat Piers Anthony" will—eventually—contain everything anyone wanted or needed to know about Piers Anthony. A grandiose idea if I ever heard one!

Here is the definition of the spelling Compleat:

Main Entry: com·pleat
Pronunciation: kom-'plEt
Function: adjective
Etymology: archaic variant of complete in The Compleat Angler (1653) by Izaak Walton
Date: 1526

Where Can I Find Piers' Books?

Most of his recent works are being published by TOR. Most major bookstores, such as Barnes and Noble, Borders, B. Daltons, Waldenbooks, and many others, regularly carry many of his current offerings.

Amazon.com has an extensive listing of current and older books. eBay auctions is another source for older, out-of-print books and pulps (with short stories) and is also a place to acquire signed items.

Since he has been publishing so many books for such a long period, you should be able to locate several older books at used bookstores and second-hand shops.

Also you might want to try ABE Book Exchange. A search on "Piers Anthony" will usually yield over 6,000 offerings, many of which are out-of-print, autographed, or other collector's items.

How Can I Get In Touch With Piers?

You can write to Piers via the web by sending an e-mail to humfrey@hipiers.com. This is not Piers' actual e-mail address, but your mail will be printed and forwarded to him. Or write to him in care of TOR publishing.

Is Piers On The Internet?

Piers has just recently "physically" gotten on to the internet. He does have an e-mail and browser account and he has been surfing around to find out what the wide world of the internet is all about. In a recent interview that Marisol (of PATH) did with Piers, he was asked about his web connection. (Reprinted with permission.)

"I am slowly getting into the Internet, mainly so far with email and sightseeing various sites. As yet I haven't visited many websites, but I'll get there. My initial impression is that there's a vast difference between a page with two paragraphs of text that hasn't been updated in six months, and a massive site like, say Amazon.com. To which any experienced Web traveler will say Duh!"

He wants his e-mail address to remain confidential at this time so as not to be overwhelmed from fans.

Whatever happened to Hi Piers?

Hi Piers is still open for business, but no longer sells books. Hi Piers was originally set up by Piers Anthony to allow his fans to purchase his books when they could not find them anywhere else. Because of publisher's distribution problems and mistakes, many times Piers' books were not distributed in large quantities, or to all bookstores. Piers got letter after letter from his fans that they could not get his books.

Frustrated with his publishers, and wanting to get his books into the hands of his fans, Piers, with help from a group of talented people, set up a new company called Hi Piers. They published a bimonthly newsletter in which Piers Anthony wrote a column chronicling what was going on in his life, as well as reviews of his upcoming books. Hi Piers also sold only Piers Anthony books, tapes, and other related items.

The company went through several changes over the years. It changed "management" hands and took on a smaller scope. Finally, costs to keep it running exceeded sales of books. Since Piers Anthony books were now becoming widely available on places like Amazon.com, anyone could get copies.

Hi Piers ceased to be a book-selling firm and instead became a web site. The Hi Piers newsletter converted from a printed and mailed publication to an online web article that is still published bimonthly. Hi Piers is Piers Anthony's official website. Now it is maintained primarily by Piers' wife Cam and their webmistress, Seema Seachrist.

By the way, as a word of warning: the original Hi Piers toll-free phone number (where you could call and place an order) was 1-800-HIPIERS. However, when Hi Piers stopped selling books, this number was turned back over to AT&T. Since that time, a pornography company has leased the number, so if you call it you will be connected to a sex line. Beware!! Piers has contacted AT&T, but there is really nothing they—or he—can do about it. This phone number was highly publicized and still appears in print in many of Piers' books. Don't call it!

Will The Mode Series Ever Be Finished?

Yes! DoOon Mode is scheduled to be published by TOR sometime in 2001.

Which Newsgroups About Piers Are Available?

There is only one currently. The alt.fan.piers-anthony newsgroup.

If you search newsgroups for "piers" you will also turn up alt.fan.piers. The "piers" referred to in alt.fan.piers isn't Piers *Anthony*. It's Piers *Wombwell*, the world-famous Piers. They also have an FAQ which I would recommend before making any assumptions about the group. Please do not cross-post if you do participate in the alt.fan.piers group.

What Mailing Lists / Threads About Piers Are Available?

Check out PATH (the Piers Anthony Thread). This is a great group of people and we talk all the time. A lot of timely news comes out of this group. Marisol and Sean head it up and do a great job! Well worth a look!!

When Did The Compleat Piers Anthony Website Start?

It started up in January 1999.
