The ARC is a pre-publication of a novel. Most novels (to be published in hardcover) will be issued in this form. They are sent to the author and others to proofread before final printing. They are sent to other authors and book reviewers to solicit favorable quotes to publish on the cover. In addition, many of these ARCs are distributed to individuals and companies at book review and trade shows. They are also sent to larger bookdealers for their review and ordering considerations. These copies can be highly collectible as they can contain part of the story that is cut or re-written before final publication. Also, the ARC is considered by many collectors to be the true first edition, since this is the first time the book is in print in any form. ARCs are almost always in a trade paperback-type edition, plain colored cardboard covers with printing. Usually no graphics, pictures, or artwork appears on the cover, but sometimes will be included. While most novels are issued this way, I have only listed the ARCs where I have a copy, or have verified that a copy does exist. ![]() These are essentially slightly larger than the paperback edition, but in hardbound. It looks like the paperback edition's cover was removed and it was bound into a hardbound edition. The cover is a slightly "washed-out" duplicate of the original paperback enlarged to wrap around the backing boards. Issued with no dust jacket. And interesting little edition that is usually quite rare and hard to get. ![]() The Piers Anthony Collection at the University of South Florida Tampa Campus Library.
