The Compleat Piers AnthonyA Picture of Jesus |

The following contains spoilers... "A Picture of Jesus" appeared in Science Fiction Age magazine. On the cover it is titled "Dragon's Revenge." Science Fiction Age seems to do this a lot. Actually, believe it or not, the titles are related. The story takes place in a mental hospital where an attendant is trying to speak with a particularly disturbed man. The man is staring at some spots on the wall and tells the attendant that it is a picture of Jesus. This relates to those 'dot' pictures, such as "Magic Eye" where you have a scrambled mass of colored dots and splotches. If you stare at it in the proper way it suddenly becomes a three dimensional picture. The premise is that once someone can "see" these images, all of a sudden the entire world looks different. You see an alternate realty by looking at everything around you. Not many do this, luckily, because it turns out that there are true dragons in the world. Like the Magic Eye pictures, we just cannot see them normally. But once you see them, and they discover that you can see them, well, let's just say they are not happy about it. A short story that is long on thought-provoking ideas. You may want to think twice about picking up that next Magic Eye book! Science Fiction Age, July 1993, Pages 56-61. Illustration by Nick Smith. [Listed on the magazine cover as Piers Anthony: Dragon's Revenge] Working inside the hospital's violent ward, Ethan Drake had grown used to dealing with his patient's demons -- but he hadn't counted on coming face to face with a dragon. A rare short story from the best-selling novelist. Also has contributor profile of Piers on page 82, with small picture.
